Belongings valued at $50,000 were stolen while the family was attending a funeral, according to the victim.

During a woman’s attendance at her mother’s funeral in Houston, Texas, her home in the Memorial area was ransacked and burglarized. Adrianne Hart, 31, and Sage Grider, 29, were subsequently arrested by the Houston Police Department and charged with burglary of a habitation.

As Caryn Papantonakis and her children returned from the funeral last Tuesday afternoon, they discovered through their home surveillance system that their residence was being broken into. The surveillance footage revealed that the two women spent over 30 minutes inside the house, leaving it thoroughly ransacked. The stolen items included jewelry, silver, the children’s backpacks, car keys, holiday stockings, and various other belongings, totaling over $50,000.

In the days following the incident, HPD tracked the children’s AirPods to the women’s apartment, where investigators recovered some of the stolen items. Additional stolen goods were located at a pawn shop. The violation of the burglary has left Papantonakis struggling to grieve her mother’s death, as she has been occupied with re-securing her home and car, along with identifying missing items.

Notably, the same women were previously arrested in 2020 by Memorial Villages police for a similar burglary during a funeral, involving the theft of a deceased person’s car and stolen goods found in the trunk. During that investigation, a list of names of recently deceased individuals and their family members was discovered. Both Grider and Hart are currently on probation from that case.

As the investigation into Papantonakis’ case unfolded, HPD linked the two women to another recent burglary and car theft victimizing a 97-year-old woman. In court on Monday, both Hart and Grider faced charges from both sets of incidents and were ordered to stay away from each other during the legal proceedings. Their bonds are set at $105,000 each.

Emotionally affected by the violation of their home, Papantonakis and her children plan to establish a foundation in her mother’s name. The foundation aims to provide support by having someone present at homes during funeral services to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Hart’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 31
