Fort Worth police officer arrested on DWI charge, department says

A Fort Worth police officer was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, his department said.

Eduardo Gasca, who was off-duty at the time of the incident, was arrested by the Venus Police Department. He did not appear in jail records Tuesday.

Gasca has been with the Fort Worth Police Department since 2013 and is assigned to the patrol bureau. He is on administrative leave while the department investigates.

“The Fort Worth Police Department holds its officers to a high standard on and off duty; therefore, a thorough investigation to collect and review the facts and the circumstances of these allegations will be conducted,” the department wrote in a news release.

No additional information was immediately available.

Gasca made headlines in 2014 after fatally shooting a robbery suspect — 55-year-old Gilbert Reyna — when Reyna charged at officers with a baseball bat and a screwdriver. Former Fort Worth police Chief Jeffrey Halstead said Gasca acted appropriately, and a Tarrant County grand jury ultimately declined to indict him in early 2015.
