Police investigating who fired shot that killed 6-year-old girl in Old East Dallas

Police are investigating after a young girl was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon in Old East Dallas.

Officers responded about 2:40 p.m. to a townhome complex in the 2100 block of North Fitzhugh Avenue, according to a police news release.

A 6-year-old was found shot inside one of the residences. The child was taken in critical condition to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.

The girl was inside the home with other minors and an unsecured firearm when she was injured.

“It is unknown how the child was shot at this time,” the release stated.

Outside the building, neighbors gathered as police investigated on a windy afternoon.

Crime scene tape could be seen blocking Fuqua Road from North Fitzhugh Avenue.

Markia Boyd, 28, who lives two units down from where the child was found, said she was at CVS with her children when she returned home to find the road blocked off.

”It’s shocking, this is the first time I’ve seen something like this since I’ve been here,” Boyd said.

Boyd said she seldom sees the residents of the unit where the shooting reportedly occurred, and described them as “quiet” people who mostly keep to themselves.

“I don’t see her outside too much, they’ll come out every once in a while, I know my kids have played with them a couple times,” Boyd said.

The investigation is ongoing under case No. 005344-2024.

No arrests were announced and no additional information was immediately available.
