Southwest, American delay flights at D-FW airports with winter weather

Southwest Airlines and American Airlines are experiencing winter weather challenges in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, causing delays and cancellations at North Texas’ airports.

As of 4 p.m. on Sunday, 12% of flights leaving Dallas Love Field were delayed and 10% of flights were canceled, according to FlightAware. At DFW International Airport, 24% of flights leaving were delayed and 1% were canceled. Southwest delayed 29% of its flights for the day and canceled 10%. American delayed 20% of its flights.

The majority of the delays or cancellations came from flights heading to or leaving from Chicago or Denver, key winter weather hubs that have often plagued travelers with bad weather.

Much of North Texas was placed under a winter weather advisory for parts of Sunday and Monday, prepared for freezing rain and sleet. The advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Fort Worth began noon Sunday and is scheduled to expire noon Monday.

Southwest and American both have issued travel alerts for D-FW passengers dealing with the flying uncertainty the next two days.
