De-icing crews hard at work to clear Houston-area roads and overpasses, though some icy spots remain

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Icy road conditions continue to cause problems for some drivers across Houston on Tuesday.

We’ve got an Weather Alert Day in effect through noon Wednesday due to icy areas in parts of southeast Texas and a hard freeze.

Freezing rain, sleet, and some snow fell across southeast Texas on Monday. Meanwhile, temperatures have stayed below freezing, so some roadways, especially bridges and overpasses, still have some icy spots.

The Houston Police Department said its officers have worked more than 580 crashes since midnight, and more than 100 of those were ice-related. None of the 100-plus ice-related crashes were fatal.

There are also multiple traffic lights out across the city. Houston Public Works said it had received more than 400 calls to 311 about traffic lights being out.

TxDOT crews worked overnight, trying to make the roadways safer for drivers.

ABC13 sent a crew to check out some of the freeway stretches that caused problems on Monday. While many areas are looking dry and clear, there are still shiny, slick spots on overpasses and bridges.

TxDOT crews treated the roadways with a brine mixture to help melt the ice.

According to drivetexas.org, only a few freeway stretches in the Houston area are still affected by ice.

The northbound and southbound lanes of I-69 have been reopened in Fort Bend County.

Fort Bend County officials said overpasses on Grand Parkway are open. West Park overpasses, however, remain closed.
