An investigation reveals that hundreds of postal employees have been identified as responsible for stealing mail.

Emily Metoyer’s family printing business, established by her father in his garage 50 years ago, has evolved significantly over time, offering funeral program design and printing services. Despite expansions and modernization, the tradition of customers paying invoices with paper checks via mail remains unchanged. However, Metoyer has encountered challenges over the past year with missing incoming and outgoing checks, causing concern for the family-owned enterprise.

Beginning in late 2022, Metoyer observed a pattern of missing checks, with some envelopes found ripped open upon arrival. It was evident that checks were being stolen, altered fraudulently, and cashed. Despite efforts to secure mail by opting to collect it personally from the Oak Forest Station, missing mail and tampered checks persisted, raising suspicions of internal mishandling within the postal service.

The USPS denied an interview request regarding Metoyer’s concerns, but investigations revealed documented issues within the agency, including cases of mail theft by USPS employees. The Office of Inspector General initiated a mail theft investigation at the Oak Forest Station, acknowledging the complaints and pledging ongoing review.

While emphasizing that the majority of postal employees are law-abiding, the Office of Inspector General affirmed its commitment to addressing criminal behavior. Meanwhile, statewide investigations uncovered instances of missing USPS arrow keys, essential for accessing mailboxes and units. A recent audit highlighted deficiencies in key management at the Oak Forest Station, further underscoring operational challenges within the postal service.

Metoyer expressed frustration with the lack of response from USPS to her complaints, emphasizing the potential impact on her business. The ordeal has diverted her attention from core responsibilities, necessitating extensive communication with customers and banks regarding stolen checks.

In light of these challenges, Metoyer called for increased oversight and accountability within local USPS branches to safeguard businesses reliant on postal services.
