Issa Rae expresses apprehensions regarding the future of Hollywood: ‘Feeling afraid and uncertain’

Issa Rae is forthright about her perspective on the current state of the entertainment industry.

In a recent online cover story for Time magazine, the actress, writer, and producer criticized Hollywood executives for failing to fulfill their promises to improve diversity and representation.

Rae expressed her concerns, stating, “I’ve never witnessed Hollywood in such a state of fear and uncertainty, being dictated to by Wall Street.” She later added, “I hate to say it, but there’s a lack of astute executives now. Many of them have aged out and are clinging to their positions, resisting the infusion of new talent.”

According to the star of Insecure, crucial creative decisions are now being made by executives who have too much influence. She remarked, “Now these corporate leaders are also dictating the direction of Hollywood. They aren’t creative individuals. Stick to the financial aspects. The ones taking risks are on platforms like TikTok, capturing the attention of younger audiences. Hollywood is undermining its own industry.”

Rae’s comments come in the wake of HBO Max canceling the second season of her show Rap Sh!t. She has faced considerable challenges in 2023, describing the year as “not enjoyable.”

While Rae’s existing contract with WarnerMedia, signed in 2021, spans five years, it does not prevent her from exploring other opportunities. Her collaboration with HBO commenced in 2016.

While Rae currently feels secure in her partnership with HBO, she disclosed to Porter earlier this week that she is contemplating alternative creative avenues following her show’s recent cancellation.

Rae expressed her observations, stating, “We’re witnessing the cancellation of numerous Black shows, the dismissal of numerous executives—especially those focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. It’s becoming increasingly evident that our stories are not a top priority.” She emphasized, “This has prompted me to take more steps towards independence in the future, if necessary.”
