Henry Cavill came close to landing the role of James Bond in Casino Royale before Daniel Craig secured the part

Henry Cavill came very close to securing the role of James Bond in Casino Royale due to his outstanding audition.

During an interview on SiriusXM, director Matthew Vaughn disclosed that the filmmakers nearly chose Cavill for the iconic role, but ultimately went with Daniel Craig due to his age suitability.

“When Henry was auditioning for Bond, I was at Pinewood, right? And Daniel was as well at the same time,” Vaughn shared. “I’d go off and meet with Daniel and [I’d] say ‘what’s going on,’ and he said ‘there’s this young guy, Henry Cavill I think they’re seeing as well [for the auditions]’.”

Vaughn explained that director Martin Campbell and producer Barbara Broccoli had differing opinions on the best candidate for the character.

“It got down to the last two for Bond… And I know that the director preferred your audition,” Vaughn revealed. “But [producer] Barbara [Broccoli] preferred [Craig]”.

He further explained: “So, just so you know, and they decided you were too young.”

Although Cavill’s latest role in the spy thriller film resembles James Bond, the actor expressed that it wouldn’t necessarily impact his chances of playing the iconic character in the future.

“Whether I’m ruled out of Bond because of this or not is up to Barbara Broccoli and [producer] Mr. Wilson,” Cavill stated to Games Radar.
