A new docuseries delving into the murder of Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla-Pérez offers fresh insights into the 1995 killing of the Mexican-American cultural icon.
On March 31, 1995, Selena was tragically shot by Yolanda Saldívar, a former manager of Selena’s boutiques and a devoted fan.
In the two-part Oxygen True Crime limited docuseries titled “Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them,” Saldívar speaks out from behind bars.
“In light of the passing years, I believe it’s time to present the true narrative,” Saldivar stated in a promotional clip. “I believe the public deserves to uncover the reality.”
Oxygen True Crime reports that Saldívar is extensively interviewed, marking the first time in over two decades that she has spoken publicly about the murder, and notably in English.
Saldivar reflects on her friendship and professional association with Selena during numerous in-depth interviews conducted from her prison confinement.
Moreover, Saldivar’s family sheds light on the dynamic between the two women and unveils previously undisclosed recordings and documents, aiming to reveal aspects of the tragedy beyond what the public already knows.
The docuseries features unique perspectives from individuals intimately connected to the tragedy and Selena’s enduring legacy, including Corpus Christi Police Department detectives, prosecuting attorneys involved in Saldivar’s trial, the hostage negotiator who engaged with Saldivar for nine hours post-shooting, and journalists specializing in Selena and Latinx culture.
Saldivar is eligible for parole next year.
The series premieres on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. with two consecutive episodes, followed by the third and final episode at 7 p.m. on Feb. 18. Audiences can stream the series on Peacock the day after its broadcast.
Oxygen True Crime, a television network under NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast, oversees the docuseries. NBCUniversal also owns NBC 5.
