National Geographic debuts ‘The Space Race,’ delving into the untold narratives of America’s pioneering Black astronauts

In Houston, Texas, the goal of NASA and its renowned space crews has long been to reach the moon and explore beyond. A vital aspect of this mission is the contribution of Black astronauts, who are highlighted in National Geographic’s latest documentary, “The Space Race.”

anchor Erica Simon attended the screening of the film at Space Center Houston in January. She interviewed both past and present luminaries who have left their mark on space exploration amidst the backdrop of racial injustice on Earth.

Ed Dwight, standing at only 5 feet 4 inches tall, reflects on his journey as a decorated Air Force pilot and officer in the early 1960s. Hand-picked by President John F. Kennedy as the nation’s first Black American astronaut candidate, Dwight’s aspirations were halted by historical events. His story, along with those of other pioneering Black pilots, scientists, and engineers such as Ron McNair and Guion Bluford, forms the backbone of “The Space Race.”

Directors Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Lisa Cortes spent years researching and showcasing these narratives, aiming to ensure that the stories of Black astronauts are not lost to history.

Leland Melvin, an astronaut who served aboard NASA’s Space Shuttle Atlantis and now serves as Executive Director of the film, hopes that “The Space Race” will inspire every child to believe in their potential.

Victor Glover, a U.S. Navy captain and fighter pilot, is set to become the first Black American to journey to the moon in NASA’s Artemis II mission. His inclusion in the film underscores the legacy of those who came before him.

As the film underscores, NASA’s quest for space exploration provided an opportunity to address racial inequalities. While acknowledging the dark chapters of history, the creators of “The Space Race” hope to enlighten audiences and inspire future generations.

Ed Dwight, reflecting on his role as a trailblazer, emphasizes the importance of preparation and determination in achieving one’s aspirations, encouraging the next generation to pursue their dreams relentlessly.
