According to prosecutors, the suspected gunman asserts that he was contracted to shoot an employee at the taco stand.

A Katy resident reportedly informed someone that he had been contracted to carry out a shooting at a taco truck in southwest Houston, as per prosecutors.

On November 3, 2022, authorities stated that a gray Cadillac pulled up to a taco truck in the 8700 block of S. Braeswood near Gessner and opened fire.

During the incident, 19-year-old Sergio Chavez, one of the truck’s employees, sustained a gunshot wound to the head, while his father narrowly avoided being shot.

Jeremy Hartman emerged as a potential suspect in the shooting within weeks of the incident, although charges related to his alleged involvement were not filed until Monday, following his arrest on February 8 for marijuana possession.

On Wednesday, prosecutors disclosed that there were indications Hartman might have been contracted to target the taco truck employees.

Assistant District Attorney Alexander Fryer stated, “All we do have is a confession made to a witness who stated that the defendant had stated that he had been paid to do this.”

Hartman’s lawyer denies any involvement in a shooting-for-hire scheme and maintains his client’s innocence.

“A lot has gone on between now and, obviously, 2022. The first place we’re going to be looking at is, ‘Why did it take so long to bring about these charges?'” attorney Brian LaVine explained.

Apart from the aggravated assault and serious bodily injury charge stemming from the taco truck shooting, Hartman is facing three pending felony cases.

In an unrelated incident two months prior to the shooting, he allegedly brandished a gun at two women in a road rage incident while driving the same gray Cadillac. He is also accused of attempting to strangle his then-girlfriend last year.

Hartman is currently held on a $500,000 bond.
