Harris County DA appoints special prosecutor to Arlene Alvarez case 2 years after deadly shooting

Two years have passed since 9-year-old Arlene Alvarez tragically lost her life on Valentine’s Day while on her way to dinner with her family. Now, there’s a renewed effort to delve deeper into her case, as Arlene’s family honors her memory with a celebration of life tribute and dove release.

In a recent development, it has been revealed that the Harris County District Attorney has appointed a special prosecutor to investigate Arlene’s case.

Arlene’s untimely death occurred one year ago when she, along with her parents and younger brother, was en route to enjoy pizza in the Gulfgate area. Simultaneously, Tony Earls found himself in the midst of a robbery at a Chase Bank ATM. Mistaking the Alvarez family’s car for the getaway vehicle, Earls fired shots, inadvertently striking Arlene, who was seated in the backseat. Despite efforts to save her, Arlene succumbed to her injuries the following day.

While Earls was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, a grand jury chose not to indict him. The search for the robber who initiated the tragic chain of events continues, leaving Arlene’s family grappling with the profound loss caused by someone’s negligence.
