NBC 5’s Bianca Castro shines light on Dallas nonprofit skatepark 4DWN on ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’

“The Kelly Clarkson Show” launched its search for the 2024 Good Neighbor of the Year, spotlighting the Dallas nonprofit 4DWN Project, which operates a skatepark and provides meals to families in south Dallas.

NBC 5 anchor Bianca Castro, accompanied by 4DWN’s founder Rob Cahill and Director of Development and Programming Theresa, praised the nonprofit for its unique approach to community service.

Castro emphasized that 4DWN stands out because it offers a 6,000-square-foot indoor-outdoor skatepark and community center in an area of south Dallas with limited recreational options for children. At 4DWN, kids not only engage in a new sport but also enjoy physical activity and a safe environment.

Another distinguishing factor of 4DWN, Castro noted, is its initiative to distribute unused fresh food to families in need, preventing it from going to landfills. The food distribution occurs twice a week at the facility.

Initially a private skatepark for Cahill’s professional skateboarding friends, 4DWN transformed into a community-focused organization aiming to address disparities in south Dallas. Cahill recognized the area’s need for recreational spaces, infrastructure, and access to food, prompting the shift in the organization’s mission.

Theresa, who began as a volunteer, highlighted the uniqueness of 4DWN’s food distribution program and its diverse volunteer base, mirroring the community it serves.

4DWN’s programming extends beyond skateboarding, including Native American fashion shows and Black History Month events, reflecting its commitment to community engagement and inclusivity.

Stephanie, a volunteer and beneficiary of 4DWN’s services, shared how the organization’s support, including free skateboarding lessons and nutritious food, positively impacted her and her daughters’ lives. Now actively involved in organizing food distribution and other activities, Stephanie appreciates the positive influence 4DWN has had on her family.

Through its multifaceted initiatives, 4DWN endeavors to uplift and support the local community, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment among its members.
