CASA Quilters stitching warm hugs for children in need of a little love

While retirement often conjures images of relaxation for many, for the CASA Quilters, retirement means giving back to the community.

Joyce Gregory, one of the founding members, finds quilting for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) to be the most fulfilling volunteering experience she’s had. CASA advocates for abused or neglected children, and the quilters support this cause by crafting quilts and blankets.

The majority of CASA Quilters are retirement age, or as Gregory humorously puts it, “mature” and even “beyond mature.” The group started 13 years ago and meets biweekly at the First United Methodist Church in Duncanville to create quilts and blankets for donation to Dallas CASA.

Chad Frymire, Dallas CASA’s Director of Public Policy, emphasizes the significant impact the quilters have had over the years, bringing hope to thousands of foster children. The quilts often serve as a tangible symbol of comfort and pride for these children during their time in foster care.

Barbara Cadman, another CASA Quilter, expresses her commitment to the cause, jokingly mentioning her resolve to keep quilting until she runs out of fabric.

Recently, the CASA Quilters celebrated a remarkable milestone, having created over 5,032 quilts and blankets to date. The quilters take pride in knowing that their handcrafted creations bring comfort and warmth to children in need.

Ruth Lloyd, a CASA Quilter, underscores the importance of providing comfort to children in distress, highlighting the significance of their efforts.

Additionally, Dallas CASA extends the reach of the quilts by sharing them with other organizations such as the North Texas Coalition Against Human Trafficking, the Dallas Police Department, and foster care group homes.
