DeSoto first responders honored for saving woman who was ‘clinically dead’

A team of first responders in DeSoto received the city’s Life-Saver Award for their efforts in assisting a woman who collapsed on Christmas Eve.

Gale Ward, 77, had stopped breathing but was revived through a collaborative effort, including her grandson, who received CPR instructions from 911 operators over the phone.

During Monday night’s city council meeting, the group of firefighters, 911 operators, and EMTs involved in the rescue operation were recognized with a presentation. It was the first opportunity for Gale Ward’s son to express gratitude to the men and women since the near-fatal incident.

Jeff Ward, Gale’s son, expressed his appreciation, acknowledging the responders’ professionalism and life-saving actions.

On Christmas Eve, Jeff Ward received distressing news while heading to his mother’s home for a family gathering: Gale Ward had collapsed, wasn’t breathing, and had no pulse.

Upon arriving, Jeff found firefighters administering chest compressions, having taken over from his 19-year-old nephew, who had received CPR instructions over the phone.

After 8 minutes of resuscitation efforts, Gale Ward’s pulse returned, and she was transported to the hospital. Though she was placed in a medically induced coma, she ultimately survived and returned home with her family nearly two months later.

Fire Chief Bryan Southard expressed pride in presenting life-saving awards to the firefighters and dispatchers involved in the rescue.

During the ceremony, the first responders received a standing ovation for their heroic efforts. Jeff Ward expressed his gratitude, recognizing the responders for bringing his mother back to him.

Reflecting on the incident, Ward emphasized his mother’s deep gratitude to everyone who played a role in saving her life.
