Former Houston Rockets player Robert Reid dies at 68, team says

The Houston Rockets announced the passing of former guard/forward Robert Reid, a key figure in the team’s inaugural NBA Finals appearances during the 1980s, at the age of 68 due to cancer, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.

Tilman Fertitta, owner of the Rockets, expressed deep sorrow over Reid’s death, highlighting his significant role in the team’s history. Fertitta recalled knowing Reid for over four decades, praising his positive demeanor and contributions to the Rockets’ legacy. He fondly remembered watching Reid compete in the NBA Finals during the 1980s and acknowledged Reid’s passion for the game.

Reid, originally from San Antonio, enjoyed a decade-long tenure with the Rockets, notably participating in the team’s Finals appearances in 1980-81 and 1985-86. Standing at 6 feet 8 inches, Reid was drafted by the Rockets in the second round of the 1977 NBA Draft and made his professional debut on Oct. 21, 1977. Throughout his NBA career, Reid also played for the Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Philadelphia 76ers before retiring in 1991 at the age of 35.

He is survived by his wife, Diana, and their children Robert Jr., Keva, Crystal, and Jana.
