Fight among 3 patients leads to 1 of them dead at Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, police say

In Houston’s Spring Branch North area, a confrontation within a behavioral hospital resulted in one man’s death and another individual being injured on Wednesday afternoon.

Houston Police Department’s Northwest Patrol officers and homicide investigators were summoned to the 2800 block of Gessner Road at Kempwood, the location of Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital.

According to HPD Lieutenant Larry Crowson, three male patients engaged in a physical altercation inside the facility around 1 p.m. Although no weapons were involved, two individuals sustained unspecified traumatic injuries.

While one man died at the hospital, the other was promptly transported for medical attention and stabilized.

Law enforcement detained one of the patients involved in the altercation, although it remains unclear if he is responsible for the injuries inflicted on the others.

Owned by California-based Aurora Behavioral Healthcare LLC, Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital is described on its website as one of the largest privately held psychiatric hospital companies in the country, providing services to thousands of patients annually.

The facility offers a range of inpatient and outpatient programs addressing emotional, behavioral, and chemical dependency issues.

Both the Northwest Patrol and Homicide units are investigating the incident.
