Experts say the earlier you schedule a dental appointment, the better you cut risk of heart disease

In recognition of “Heart Health” month in February, attention is being drawn to the connection between oral health and the risk of heart disease. According to experts like Dr. Thomas Servos from UT Health, maintaining good oral health involves more than just brushing and flossing.

Dr. Servos emphasizes the significance of using mouthwash with antimicrobial agents to combat bacteria that can lead to bad breath. He highlights the presence of various bacteria in the mouth and how untreated oral infections, such as cavities, could enter the bloodstream and reach the heart. In addition to regular tooth brushing, Dr. Servos recommends brushing the tongue to remove bacteria, suggesting the use of a tongue scraper for effective cleaning.

Diet also plays a role in both heart and oral health. Including crunchy vegetables in one’s diet can benefit both the heart and teeth, providing a scrubbing motion that helps clean teeth.

Staying hydrated with water is another essential aspect of oral health. Water helps dilute the acid produced by oral bacteria, contributing to overall oral health. Dr. Servos encourages a holistic approach to oral care, encompassing various practices to reduce the risk of heart disease and maintain overall well-being.
