Houston man getting little answers to fix birth certificate with ‘Infant’ as first name

Christopher Barnett, a resident of Houston, Texas, is eagerly anticipating the arrival of his first child, due soon. However, an error that occurred 23 years ago during his birth at Memorial Hermann Hospital is presenting a significant obstacle as he prepares to support his growing family.

Barnett discovered that his birth certificate issued by Memorial Hermann Hospital bears the first name “Infant,” a mistake that went unnoticed until after he completed college. “It’s been a rollercoaster,” Barnett expressed. “I’ve been trying to go through the process, but every time, I get turned around.”

The challenge he faces revolves around obtaining an identification card and legally changing his name, tasks that are typically straightforward for most individuals but prove daunting for Barnett. “I haven’t been able to get a job or work since I graduated. I can’t provide for anything,” he lamented.

Barnett’s efforts to correct his birth certificate through Texas Health and Human Services hit a roadblock when he was informed that he needed his documentation notarized. However, obtaining the required notarization poses a dilemma because he lacks valid identification due to the discrepancy in his birth certificate. Additionally, he cannot simply file for a name change because his Social Security card identifies him as Christopher.

“At times, I want to give up,” Barnett confessed. “I have been stressing. I have a kid on the way, and I don’t know if I can even get in the hospital to see my kid. I need an ID to get into the hospital.”

reached out to both Texas Health and Human Services and Memorial Hermann Hospital to seek assistance and clarification regarding the error. As of Friday, there has been no response from either organization.
