11 Republicans, 1 Democrat vying for the seat left by retiring U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess

U.S. Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX 26th District) announced his retirement from Congress at the end of his current term in November 2023. Now, a crowded field of 11 Republicans and one Democrat are vying to fill his seat.

Burgess, aged 73, stated last year in an interview with NBC 5 that his decision to retire stemmed from a desire to spend more time with his family and to avoid discussions about the age of presidential candidates, emphasizing that he was in good health with no major medical issues. Having been first elected in 2002, Burgess will have served 11 two-year terms in Congress by the time he steps down in January 2025.

The Republican ballot features a diverse lineup of candidates including Scott Armey, Neena Biswas, Vlad De Franceschi, Luisa Del Rosal, Brandon Gill, John Huffman, Jason Kergosien, Joel Krause, Doug Robison, Burt Thakur, and Mark Rutledge (who does not have a website).

Scott Armey, son of former Congressman Dick Armey, previously vied for the district in 2002 but lost to Burgess in a runoff election. Brandon Gill, endorsed by former President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, is known for his involvement in the production of “2000 Mules,” a documentary alleging widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election. John Huffman, the current mayor of Southlake, has also served on the City Council.

On the Democratic side, Ernest Lineberger III is running unopposed and will compete against the Republican nominee in the November election.

To secure the nomination without a runoff, a candidate must receive 50% of the vote. Otherwise, the top two candidates will participate in a runoff on Tuesday, May 28, with the winner advancing to the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
