Sean Teare hands primary defeat to Harris County DA and former boss Kim Ogg, projects

ABC13 has projected that Kim Ogg’s tenure as the Harris County district attorney will conclude after eight years, with her former deputy, Sean Teare, anticipated to win the Democratic primary.

Teare, who served as Ogg’s lead prosecutor in the DA’s Vehicular Crimes Division from 2017 to 2023, secured a commanding lead of 78% to 22% based on early ballot counts, with no precincts reporting yet. Ogg’s bid for a third term faced significant challenge, pitting her against a once-trusted deputy in what became a fiercely contested race.

Despite comfortably winning reelection in 2020, Ogg’s vulnerability in this primary underscored the intensity of the contest. Teare emphasized a commitment to improving morale within the district attorney’s office and advocated for depoliticizing the position, while Ogg focused on her record of accomplishments and the ongoing work ahead.

The race also saw endorsements from prominent figures such as Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner in support of Teare, adding layers of complexity to the political dynamics.

Although Teare’s victory in the primary sets the stage for him to potentially become the county’s next DA, he will face Republican opponent Dan Simons in the general election, aiming to become the first GOP Harris County district attorney since 2016.
