CONCACAF Champions Cup: Dynamo own goal in stoppage time puts Houston behind after 1st leg vs. Crew

The Houston Dynamo face a challenging task of overcoming a one-goal deficit in the CONCACAF Champions Cup following the first leg against the Columbus Crew, where the visiting team secured a goal on Wednesday night.

Despite Houston’s efforts in the Round of 16 series, they were unable to score in the initial match against the MLS Cup champions. Their hopes were further dashed when, in stoppage time, the Crew capitalized on a free kick awarded due to a foul committed by Houston’s Amine Bassi. The resulting crowded box led to an own goal by midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla, leaving Dynamo goaltender Steve Clark unable to prevent the score.

However, the Dynamo remain in contention due to the aggregate scoring system. Both teams are set to face off again next Wednesday, March 12, in Columbus, leaving various scenarios on the table.

With Columbus holding an away goal advantage, if Houston scores while keeping the Crew scoreless in the second leg, both teams would be tied with one away goal each. In such a scenario, extra time would be played, followed by a penalty shootout if the tie persists.

Houston can secure advancement if they win the second leg with a 2-1 scoreline, resulting in a level aggregate of 2-2 but with Houston holding the advantage of an away goal, the primary tiebreaker.

As long as the Dynamo maintain a one-goal advantage after 90 minutes, they have the opportunity to either advance or force extra time.

However, failure to score or a loss in the second leg would lead to Houston’s elimination from the tournament.

The Dynamo’s next MLS fixture is scheduled for Saturday, March 16, against the Portland Timbers. With a draw, a loss, and only one point from two matches, Houston seeks to improve their standings in the season.
