No injuries after bullets hit Houston mosque during Ramadan event, HPD says no hate crime proof

In a southwest Houston mosque, nearly 100 worshippers were led through prayers by faith leaders when their sense of security was shattered by three bullets piercing through the building on Friday evening, captured on camera during a live-streamed service.

Zahoor Gire, the executive director of Alnoor Masjid mosque on Prestwood Drive near Gulfton Street, recounted the harrowing moment when gunshots disrupted the event.

“At first, we heard gunshots during the event,” Gire recalled.

Initial apprehensions led them to believe it was a hate crime, fueled by rising tensions over the war in Gaza and the beginning of Ramadan, their holiest holiday. The community feared they were targeted in an act of violence.

“The community is already on edge as it is,” Gire expressed.

Houston Police, however, allayed their fears by confirming that the bullets were from a nearby shooting unrelated to the mosque, providing a sense of relief to the congregation.

“While no one was hurt, the incident shook the congregation, bringing an unwelcome intrusion into their place of worship,” Gire remarked.

Expressing concern, Gire emphasized the need for increased patrols in the area, especially with Ramadan approaching, and stated ongoing discussions with HPD to enhance safety and security measures during the holy month.

According to police, the shooting stemmed from an altercation between two unrelated groups near the mosque, resulting in shots fired before the individuals dispersed.

With Ramadan commencing soon, mosque officials are urging their community to remain vigilant and resolute in the face of fear, emphasizing the need for unity and perseverance.

Houston police continue their investigation to ascertain the details surrounding the disturbance.
