NFL free agency 2024: Joe Mixon and a 2-time Super Bowl champ punter head to Houston, ESPN reports

In the realm of NFL free agency, Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio is likely urging fans to “trust the process” after a relatively quiet opening day.

Despite anticipation for what a roster led by C.J. Stroud would bring in 2024, fans received disappointing news with the departure of the team’s top rusher, tackler, and sacker.

However, the Texans seemed poised to pivot on Tuesday, reportedly acquiring Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon through a trade, as first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and later confirmed by ESPN’s D.J. Bien-Amie. The deal involves the Texans sending an undisclosed draft pick to the Bengals.

This move came about following a series of maneuvers in the free agent running back market. Devin Singletary, the Texans’ previous starting back, reportedly opted for the New York Giants in free agency, while Saquon Barkley is set to join the Philadelphia Eagles on a significant three-year deal.

Meanwhile, the Bengals, despite having Mixon on their roster, engaged in the running back market by reportedly signing Zack Moss from the Indianapolis Colts and subsequently releasing Mixon.

Mixon, a 27-year-old Oklahoma alum, is coming off a strong season with over 1,000 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. He also offers a reliable receiving option out of the backfield, having caught 52 passes last season.

In addition to the Mixon acquisition, the Texans re-signed wide receiver Noah Brown and added linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips from the Ravens on a one-year deal, along with punter Tommy Townsend, a two-time Super Bowl champion from the Chiefs, on a two-year contract.

As the Texans navigate through free agency, more moves are expected as they shape their roster for the 2024 season.
