NTSB unveils reports for fatal 2022 Wings over Dallas Airshow crash amid investigation

New details have emerged regarding the tragic mid-air collision at the 2022 Wings of Over Dallas Airshow, which resulted in the loss of six lives. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently released a nearly 2,000-page document shedding light on the ongoing investigation.

The airshow ended in devastation when two World War II-era aircraft collided while spectators observed from the ground. Immediately following the incident, the NTSB launched an extensive investigation into the crash.

Arturo Gonzalez, a Texas attorney with extensive experience in aviation accidents, emphasized the importance of transparency from the NTSB in such cases. He highlighted the need to address critical questions surrounding the crash, including the aircraft’s orders, formation, and altitude.

While the NTSB’s documents cover various aspects such as operational factors, human performance, and pre-show briefings, it’s emphasized that this isn’t the final report and doesn’t establish probable cause.

Gonzalez stressed the necessity of thoroughly reviewing the available information, including images, damaged equipment, and transcripts of recordings and interviews, to piece together the sequence of events leading to the collision.

The documents also provide insights into the condition of the aircraft and evidence of participants receiving pre-show safety briefings.

Regarding potential changes in airshow practices, Gonzalez suggested that sweeping alterations are unlikely and that adjustments would likely occur on a case-by-case basis over time.

As for the timeline, it’s anticipated that the final report from the NTSB may take another six months to a year to complete, providing the public with definitive answers regarding the incident.

In light of last year’s tragedy, the Commemorative Air Force chose not to hold an airshow but instead opted for an aviation festival. However, organizers have indicated their intention to resume the airshow this year.

The NTSB Public Docket containing additional information can be accessed on the NTSB’s website.
