Dallas Public Library turns prom fantasies into reality with free annual ‘Fairy Tale Closet’

High school students in the local area have the opportunity to attend prom in style without breaking the bank, thanks to the Dallas Public Library’s Fairy Tale Closet.

Now in its 10th year, this annual prom wear giveaway event provides students with the chance to find their perfect outfit for the big night at no cost, as all attire has been generously donated by the public.

“The teens absolutely love the closet. When they find their perfect prom outfit, you can see the smiles on their faces, and they’re thrilled to have a perfect dress or suit for prom,” said Latari Prater of the Dallas Public Library. “Prom can be very expensive, so the opportunity to get a free prom dress, tuxedo, or suit is priceless.”

The Fairy Tale Closet offers not only dresses and suits but also shoes, accessories, and even a few suits and jackets for those who prefer non-traditional attire. With thousands of gowns available in various sizes and styles, students are sure to find something that suits their taste.

This year, the Dallas Public Library has teamed up with the nonprofit Project Beauty to provide hair and makeup tips during the Saturday events.

The Fairy Tale Closet, located at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, will be open on the following days:

– Thursday, March 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
– Saturday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

While walk-ins are welcome, reservations are recommended and can be made in advance through the Dallas Public Library’s website.

The Fairy Tale Closet welcomes boys, girls, and non-binary students, providing fitting rooms and assistance from numerous volunteers, often referred to as ‘fairy godparents.’

Established in 2014, the Fairy Tale Closet is replenished annually with donations from individuals and organizations. Donations are accepted at all Dallas Public Library locations throughout the year.
