Dallas-Fort Worth leads all metro areas in population growth

The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex has become home to over 8.1 million residents, experiencing the highest population growth among all metropolitan areas in the United States in 2023, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Between 2022 and 2023, the DFW Metroplex added 152,598 residents, surpassing the 8 million mark to reach a total population of 8,100,037. This population increase was the largest in numeric terms across all U.S. metro areas during that period, with Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX coming in second with an addition of 139,789 residents.

Texas counties dominated the list of areas with the most new residents, claiming eight out of the top 10 spots. Harris County led the way with a gain of 53,000 people, followed by Collin, Denton, and Tarrant counties, each attracting over 27,000 new residents.

In terms of job creation, the DFW Metroplex ranked second nationwide, generating over 154,000 new jobs in 2023, trailing only behind the New York City area. Despite comprising just 2% of the total U.S. population, the Metroplex accounted for 4.5% of all new jobs created from August 2022 to 2023, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The census data, which relies on factors like net migration and changes in births and deaths, provides insights into migration patterns and population shifts. Updated population estimates based on race and ethnicity are expected to be released in June.
