Aspire Accessories empowers artisans with autism

In Houston, a unique program is empowering young artisans with autism and other special needs through Aspire Accessories.

Offering a wide range of products such as jewelry, home goods, clothing, purses, keychains, custom gifts, and more, Aspire Accessories began with a mother’s determination to help her son develop creative and vocational skills.

Denise Hazen, the founder, recalls her journey: “When my son was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder at two years old, doctors doubted his potential to contribute to society.” However, Hazen was determined to prove them wrong. At around ten years old, her son Nicholas displayed a remarkable eye for detail, catching the attention of his teacher.

“Nik started working with a leather craftsman, Peter Main, and we began making leather bracelets. It just blossomed,” Hazen explains. “I approached Nicholas’s teacher and proposed hiring his classmates to assist with production and bracelet-making.”

Now, a decade later, Aspire Accessories boasts 24 paid artisans in the program, crafting goods sold nationwide.

Artisan Valerie Codrow shares her experience: “I love working here with my friends and teachers. I started with embroidery, and it’s been wonderful. Practice makes perfect.”

Steven O’Connor, Jr., another artisan, expresses his joy: “I have several jobs here at Aspire – embroidering, sewing, painting. I enjoy making bracelets and getting paid.”

Statistics reveal that over half of young adults with autism are unemployed, and almost half of 25-year-olds with autism have never held a paying job. Aspire Accessories is striving to change this narrative for its talented artisans.

“Earning a paycheck is something many parents never thought possible for their children,” Hazen reflects. “They see the rewards of their hard work. All proceeds from our sales directly support the program, covering teacher salaries, space rental, and materials. By supporting Aspire, you’re providing meaningful employment for these deserving individuals.”

Aspire Accessories offers seasonal collections, including rodeo-themed and Easter-themed items. To learn more about the artisans and explore their products, visit aspireaccessories.com.
