Mesquite family calls for solution after car crashes into home

The scene at the intersection of Willowglen Drive and Town East Boulevard is sobering, with visible damage to the surroundings.

Yet, the sight of boarded-up windows and walls pales in comparison to the worries plaguing Mary Mitchell’s thoughts.

“The situation could have been much worse,” remarked Mary Mitchell, reflecting on the events that unfolded.

On Thursday, around 1 p.m., Mesquite Police reported a collision involving a driver exiting a Walmart parking lot and another truck before crashing into Mitchell’s residence.

“As I opened the door, I saw a man on the ground, prompting me to rush to his aid,” she recounted. “Before I reached him, I noticed the black truck had smashed into my daughter’s room. I don’t know how I managed to enter the house. It was a harrowing moment.”

Mitchell’s two daughters and one-year-old granddaughter were inside the front bedroom, now heavily damaged.

“My immediate relief was in knowing they were unharmed,” Mitchell expressed.

Both daughters were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation due to head, neck, knee, and back pain. As a stroke survivor, Mitchell herself was also transported to undergo a stress check.

Now back home, all three live in apprehension of a potential recurrence.

“Having resided here for 25 years, I’ve lost count of the accidents that have occurred,” Mitchell stated.

When questioned about the frequency of accidents at the intersection and any preventative measures considered, the city has yet to respond.

Mitchell revealed that this incident wasn’t the first time a vehicle had crashed into her property, recalling a similar event five years prior. Her concern persists, fearing future accidents.

“It’s imperative that action is taken because the next occurrence could prove fatal,” she emphasized.

Both drivers involved in the collision sustained non-incapacitating injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment.
