Garland Police prepare for influx of people for April 8 eclipse

Residents of Garland are eagerly anticipating the upcoming solar eclipse in April.

“It’s a rare occurrence, so it’s definitely something to look forward to,” remarked Jean Pricer, a Garland resident.

The Garland Police Department is well aware of the heightened interest in the event.

“We’re expecting a significant influx of people on that day,” explained Lieutenant Pedro Barineau of the Garland Police.

To prepare for the event, the Garland police, fire department, and Office of Emergency Preparedness are collaborating on emergency response plans.

“We’re preparing for the possibility of large crowds, congested highways, and increased pedestrian activity, as well as planning designated viewing areas for safety,” Barineau stated.

A major concern is preventing people from stopping on highways and roads to observe the eclipse.

“Stopping on roadways can lead to accidents and hinder emergency response efforts,” Barineau cautioned.

The police department plans to deploy additional officers for patrols during the eclipse, both as part of routine operations and from specialized units.

Residents are advised to plan ahead for eclipse day, taking into account potential traffic congestion and scheduling adjustments.

“We recommend planning early and avoiding unnecessary travel during peak times,” Barineau advised.

While some hope for school cancellations or eclipse-related activities, residents are urged to prioritize safety.

“It’s crucial to watch the eclipse safely and avoid stopping on highways at all costs,” Barineau emphasized.

For those interested, Garland is organizing a watch party on the square, providing a safe environment for eclipse viewing.
