Fort Worth Zoo lets the public see baby gorilla Jameela before she moves to Cleveland

The Fort Worth Zoo announced on Friday that Jameela, the baby gorilla born via emergency C-section, will be relocating to Cleveland, although the public will have an opportunity to see her before her departure.

Born on January 5 through a historic emergency C-section procedure, Jameela was unable to bond with her mother due to the circumstances of her birth. Despite efforts to introduce her to surrogate gorilla mothers, Jameela has been exclusively cared for by human caregivers, providing round-the-clock attention.

While the zoo had hoped for Jameela to integrate into their gorilla troop, they have prioritized her being raised by gorillas. Consequently, Jameela will be transferred to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, which has a female gorilla experienced in surrogacy.

Before her departure, the Fort Worth Zoo is offering the public a chance to see Jameela and extend their well wishes. Jameela will be spending time in the indoor gorilla habitat in the World of Primates on Saturday, March 23, and Sunday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to bring cards and pictures for Jameela and her caretakers.

Despite her relocation, there is hope that Jameela may return to the Fort Worth Zoo in the future. The zoo expressed that Jameela will always be part of their community, and they aspire to welcome her back once she has grown and her father is no longer the dominant silverback.
