Texas Rangers unfurl franchise’s first World Series championship banner

The banner descended from the roof support of Globe Life Field, positioned high above right field. Preceding this moment, manager Bruce Bochy and pitcher Josh Sborz, who sealed the final out in Game 5 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in November, ceremoniously brought the Commissioner’s Trophy to home plate.

Expressing gratitude to the fans, Bochy conveyed his appreciation for their unwavering support. The presentation of championship rings is scheduled for the second game of the series on Saturday night.

Encouraging players to cherish the moment, Bochy emphasized the significance of savoring the experience, both during the banner drop and the subsequent ring ceremony. Reflecting on his managerial tenure with the San Francisco Giants, where he secured three World Series victories, Bochy underscored the rarity and difficulty of achieving such success.

The Texas Rangers celebrated their maiden championship in their 52nd season in Texas and 63rd overall in the franchise’s history, which commenced in 1961 as the second iteration of the Washington Senators. Despite falling short in previous World Series appearances, the Rangers finally clinched the title, overcoming past disappointments.

Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer, a member of the Washington Nationals’ championship team in 2019, expressed eagerness to relish the celebratory atmosphere alongside fans. In contrast, COVID-19 restrictions during the 2020 season limited the Nationals’ ring ceremony to a virtual event conducted via Zoom.

Reflecting on the ceremony from the opposing dugout, Cubs manager Craig Counsell, who secured the run that secured the Florida Marlins’ 1997 World Series victory, candidly admitted to feelings of envy.
