2 officers were serving felony warrant when armed suspect shot, killed in NW Houston, HPD says

Two officers serving a warrant on a man accused of making threats to burn down an adult film shop fatally shot the suspect inside a residence in northwest Houston on Monday afternoon, according to police.

The Houston Police Department announced on social media about shots fired in the 4900 block of Shadowdale Drive in the Westbranch neighborhood. The call about the shooting came in around 4:30 p.m.

Preliminary information indicated that the officers discharged their weapons at an armed suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no reported injuries to the officers.

Police Chief Troy Finner provided further details, explaining that the officers belonged to the Major Offenders Division’s Fugitive Apprehension Team and had been conducting surveillance on the suspect throughout the day.

Earlier in the day, police responded to an exposure call at the same residence around 11:25 a.m. Northwest Division officers initially responded, but after coordination with the surveillance team, they withdrew, allowing the surveillance to continue.

At around 4:20 p.m., the Major Offenders Division officers began surrounding the house and attempted to apprehend the suspect. The suspect refused to comply with commands and retreated into a bedroom. Upon encountering the suspect, who was armed, the officers opened fire.

No other individuals were present in the residence. While the suspect was not immediately identified, he was accused of threatening a manager at a nearby adult film shop with a gun.

Internal affairs, the district attorney’s office, and a special investigation will commence regarding the shooting. Chief Finner noted that one of the officers has nine years of service, while the other has 15.

He emphasized the challenges faced by officers and their families and issued a warning to those considering threatening law enforcement, stating, “I’m not going to tell my officers to stand by and wait to get shot. No. So they’re doing their job to protect the entire city.”
