Houston’s Black men’s health agency gets support from Johnson & Johnson for health equity

In a recent announcement, Johnson & Johnson unveiled its commitment to supporting over 100 community-based health organizations in historically marginalized areas throughout the United States, including Houston’s African American Male Wellness Agency.

Data from the agency reveals that in 2019, HIV was five times more prevalent among Harris County’s Black population compared to its white population. Houston faces various health challenges within its Black and brown communities.

Pastor Jamail Johnson, the executive director of AAMWA, emphasized the organization’s efforts to improve the overall well-being and life expectancy of black men across multiple aspects of health, including physical health, mental health, financial health, fatherhood, and research.

Through its “My Health Can’t Wait” program, Johnson & Johnson is partnering with AAMWA to launch a community wellness initiative aimed at providing people of color with essential health information and resources.

Over the next six months, “My Health Can’t Wait” will visit 25 cities across the nation, with Houston being the inaugural location.

Scheduled for April 27, AAMWA Houston will host the “Black Men’s Wellness Day: Saving Black Men’s Lives” event at the University of Houston. The event will offer free health screenings, access to vendors, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities, all aimed at promoting wellness within the community.
