Areas of Kaufman County, DFW see nearly a foot of rain in 48 hours

Following heavy rainfall that ceased early Sunday afternoon, numerous areas were left inundated with high water and some homes suffered significant flood damage.

George Hinkle, residing at the end of Sunset Drive just outside Kaufman city limits, found himself grappling with floodwaters spilling into neighborhoods due to a nearby reservoir’s slow drainage.

“This is an ongoing issue that doesn’t seem to be improving,” lamented Hinkle.

NBC 5 previously featured the Hinkle family in October when they narrowly escaped rising floodwaters shortly after purchasing what they had hoped would be their retirement home.

Despite relocating to Forney for the past six months, the Hinkle family’s Kaufman County property faced another flood event on Friday, with 7.5 inches of rainfall exacerbating the situation.

Reflecting on the impact, Hinkle expressed concern for his neighbor’s property and planned to procure sandbags to mitigate flood damage.

This marked the second significant flash flood event since October, during which two individuals lost their lives after their vehicle was swept away.

Tragically, Hinkle recounted the loss of their therapy animals in the previous flood, stating, “They become parts of your family, all of them are gone.”

The weekend’s severe storms also affected other parts of North Texas, with drone footage from NBC 5 capturing flooded roads near White Rock Lake in Dallas. Additionally, Henderson County faced heavy rains amid a tornado watch to the southeast.

According to the Kaufman County Office of Emergency Management, such flooding incidents, like Hinkle’s property, can occur when nearly a foot of rain falls within three days.

In light of the recurring flooding, some residents expressed a desire to inform potential buyers of the property’s susceptibility to such events.

“If someone else buys this property, I’m going to make sure they know that this is what could happen to your property,” vowed Hinkle.
