Domestic violence survivor Bi Nguyen to box in her hometown of Houston

In Houston, Texas, Bi Nguyen has come full circle, finding her way back home after a journey filled with challenges and triumphs.

Reflecting on her path, Nguyen shared with during a training session at Main Street Boxing and Muay Thai that while her journey hasn’t been perfect, it’s uniquely hers. Once a mixed martial arts champion known as “Killer Bee,” Nguyen has since retired from MMA but remains committed to fighting.

Despite stepping away from MMA, Nguyen still possesses a competitive spirit and a desire to compete, particularly in her hometown of Houston. Her upcoming fight at the NRG Arena on May 25 as part of the Misfits Boxing event marks her 57th fight overall and her first in Houston since 2016.

For Nguyen, fighting is more than just sport; it’s deeply personal. Her journey into combat sports began as a means of self-defense after surviving domestic violence. Recalling her past experiences, she described the abusive relationship as physically intense, often leaving her hospitalized every two weeks. Now, Nguyen sees her return to the ring as a way to empower others, especially survivors of domestic violence.

Beyond her personal journey, Nguyen’s fight holds significance during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, highlighting her identity as the daughter of Vietnamese refugees. Despite the challenges of being an immigrant and the struggles she faced in finding a safe space, Nguyen remains resilient, having forged her own path to create a sense of security and belonging.

As she prepares to showcase her strength and resilience in her hometown, Nguyen hopes to inspire others with her story of overcoming adversity and finding empowerment through fighting.
