Thousands of Houston-area residents experienced power outages amid thunderstorms Monday

Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in southeast Texas led to power outages affecting thousands of Houston-area residents. issued a Weather Alert Day, effective through Monday evening, as CenterPoint Energy’s outage tracker recorded significant fluctuations.

Initially, at 3:03 p.m., 32,806 customers were without power, with numbers dropping to 28,619 by 3:43 p.m. and then rising to 33,580 by 4 p.m. By 8:50 p.m., the tracker showed 8,063 affected customers, with 69,524 restored within a 24-hour period.

The majority of outages were concentrated within Houston’s outer loop, coinciding with a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in several counties until 8 p.m. These storms, expected to reach Houston between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., posed threats of golf ball-sized hail and damaging winds between 60 and 80 mph.

Furthermore, both Bush and Hobby airports experienced ground stops shortly before 3 p.m., prompting travelers to check their flight status on the National Airspace System Status.
