Arlington ISD archery program named high school national champions

Arlington ISD’s archery program has achieved national recognition as a champion. Over the past weekend, the team secured top honors in the NASP high school tournament, following their eighth state championship victory in the last nine years.

Team leaders attribute their remarkable success to their focus on the often overlooked aspects of competition. According to Alexander Villanueva, the Head Coach of AISD’s Archery program, the team’s determination, coachability, and commitment have been instrumental in their achievements.

The program, which began nine years ago, has amassed an impressive record of accomplishments, including eight state championships and now a national championship. Their recent triumph at the NASP tournament, held in Utah and Kentucky, solidifies their status as national champions.

Villanueva emphasizes that the majority of students who join the program have little to no prior experience with archery. However, he believes that their unique approach to the mental aspects of competition sets them apart. Through various exercises designed to simulate high-pressure situations, the team develops the resilience and focus needed to excel.

Players like Jennifer Vera exemplify the program’s success. Starting as a novice during her freshman year, Vera has since become a three-time state champion, a testament to her dedication and skill.

Reflecting on their achievements, Vera describes the experience as surreal and exhilarating, fueled by the adrenaline of competition.

Looking ahead, Villanueva hopes to see more students embrace the sport and join the program. With the right mindset and dedication, he believes that the program can continue to produce state champions for years to come.
