HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston police fired at least one shot at a man during a scuffle as they attempted to seize his BMW on Wednesday morning in the Westwood neighborhood, located in the city’s southwest side.

The incident began when police identified the BMW, which had been involved in a previous chase on May 1. An officer approached the parked vehicle at 10200 Lansdale Drive near the West Sam Houston Parkway South. The man was inside the car, with his 5-year-old daughter nearby.

“The driver had a 5-year-old daughter with him. The officer allowed the driver to remove the daughter and place her safely on the curb,” explained Executive Assistant Chief Ban Tien. “Then, they could seize the vehicle.”

According to Tien, the man suddenly reached back into the car, leading to a struggle with the officer. A sergeant arrived to assist, and gunfire ensued.

A nearby worker, who wished to remain anonymous, reported that a bullet struck his work truck. Meanwhile, the suspect fled the scene, allegedly robbing a woman at gunpoint and taking her cell phone. He continued running through backyards and neighborhoods before being captured. Police found one gun and drugs in the BMW but are searching for a second weapon.

“Based on the complainant’s account, she was robbed at gunpoint in a second apartment complex. We have been unable to locate that weapon at this time,” Tien said.

Houston police are currently searching for the second weapon.

Investigators described the suspect as a 30-year-old convicted felon with an extensive criminal history. As of Wednesday evening, his name has not been released.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect’s daughter is now safe with her mother. Both officers involved are on administrative duty.

There were no other injuries reported, and it remains unclear what charges the suspect will face.
