Parents protest outside Herod Elementary School after HISD principals and staff terminations

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — On Wednesday, several Houston ISD parents and community members gathered outside Herod Elementary School to protest, demanding the removal of HISD Superintendent Mike Miles.

The demonstration comes in the wake of National Teacher Appreciation Week, during which a principal, 11 teachers, and at least one staff member received unexpected termination letters, plunging the school into a state of uncertainty.

Protests began earlier this month after parents discovered HISD’s decision to part ways with several beloved principals and teachers from their schools.

“The decisions being made in HISD right now lack common sense. We don’t understand the metrics being used, and they are destroying the communities we’ve developed over the years,” one HISD parent told during Wednesday morning’s protest.

A press release from Herod Elementary indicated that between 55 and 75% of its staff may not return next school year.

Students and other participants against the HISD takeover led chants and held signs and banners throughout the demonstration.
