Dallas nonprofit CitySquare will close in December amid financial difficulties

A long-standing nonprofit organization in Dallas is set to close its doors by the end of the year due to financial challenges. City Square, located off MLK Boulevard, has been a vital resource for tens of thousands of unhoused and low-income individuals annually.

City Square has initiated the process of transitioning all its programs to other nonprofit partners, a task that will require some time. However, the organization is optimistic that suitable partners will step forward to continue providing essential services.

In an interview with NBC 5, CEO Annam Manthiram stated that City Square will utilize the remaining months to ensure uninterrupted services despite its impending closure. She attributed the decision to financial constraints, emphasizing the importance of fundraising.

With a yearly outreach to approximately 27,000 individuals across various sectors including food services, housing, and healthcare, City Square has been a lifeline for many in the community.

Manthiram, who assumed her role in August, acknowledged that while she was aware of the organization’s financial struggles, she underestimated the extent of the deficit.

CitySquare currently operates with a nearly one-million-dollar deficit, as reported by our partners at the Dallas Morning News.

Founded in 1988 initially as a food pantry under a different name, CitySquare has grown into a 501C3 organization with its primary center situated on South MLK Blvd. Despite its impending closure, the organization continues to seek volunteers to ensure the smooth functioning of day-to-day operations.

For those interested in volunteering, more information can be found on the organization’s website.
