Dallas looks to change on-street parking, could benefit entertainment districts

Finding parking in busy areas of Dallas can be a challenge, prompting the City Council to consider revamping on-street parking through a curb management policy.

High-demand neighborhoods such as Uptown, Downtown, Bishop Arts, and Deep Ellum often experience parking difficulties. Following extensive studies, the city is now contemplating implementing a new strategy.

According to city staff’s report to the council, over 85% of on-street parking spots are occupied during the day. This leads to vehicles being parked improperly, obstructing travel lanes and encroaching on intersections. Such congestion can impede the passage of buses and emergency vehicles, as well as hinder the flow of customers for restaurants and businesses.

One proposed solution involves increasing the price of street parking to at least one dollar per hour. This measure aims to incentivize drivers to utilize parking garages and paid lots, thereby maintaining smoother traffic flow.

Furthermore, under the proposed plan, popular entertainment districts and commercial areas would retain 60% of the revenue generated from parking fees. This revenue would be earmarked for neighborhood-specific initiatives, including public safety enhancements, sidewalk maintenance, and streetlight repairs.
