1 week after, CenterPoint customers frustrated on homes still without power: ‘It’s sickening’

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — It’s been a week since a deadly storm hit southeast Texas, and many residents are still without power amid an intense heat wave.

CenterPoint had projected that power would be restored by Wednesday, but numerous customers are still reaching out, reporting they remain in the dark.

One such location is the North Point Villa mobile home park on Airline Drive, home to around 40 families, including Iris Mendoza, who has lived there for over 20 years.

“This is my home and my life. It’s everything,” Mendoza said.

Through hurricanes and freezes, her home has been a sanctuary. However, last Thursday’s storm forced her to leave for safety reasons.

“There is no water and no lights. It’s not possible to stay in my house,” Mendoza explained.

The storm caused a tree to fall on her roof, bringing down power lines that now rest on her home and four others. After calling 911, she was advised to leave immediately. A week later, she is still paying for a hotel stay.

“I’m really scared. So we won’t stay in the house,” she said.

CenterPoint had not yet removed the lines or restored power, a serious concern for park owner Johnny McGee.

“It will either burn their homes down or kill the people in it,” McGee warned.

After ABC13 contacted CenterPoint via email, crews arrived at the scene shortly thereafter.

McGee expressed frustration that it took media intervention to get action.

“It’s just sickening. It’s sickening that we live in such a big city and we can’t take care of our own people,” he said.

CenterPoint stated that 99% of customers have had their power restored and that they are working to address the remaining outages.
