Man, woman charged with capital murder in 2023 Frisco Walmart shooting

Two individuals have been apprehended and charged with capital murder in connection with a shooting outside a Frisco Walmart last year that resulted in the death of one man and the injury of another.

NBC 5 previously reported that Army veteran Zachary Lowe was leaving his job at the Walmart on Preston Road and Hickory Street on Nov. 15, 2023, when he was accosted by an individual who initially requested a cigarette before brandishing a firearm and demanding money. Despite complying with the demands by handing over his wallet, Lowe, then 20 years old, was shot twice in the back. Additionally, Dung Doan, a 62-year-old father of two who had recently immigrated to North Texas from Vietnam, was struck multiple times by gunfire as he walked home after shopping at the store. It was believed by Lowe’s family that Doan inadvertently startled the assailant, providing Lowe with an opportunity to flee. While Lowe survived after undergoing surgery to address his injuries, Doan succumbed to his wounds at a hospital.

Frisco police disclosed on Thursday that information provided by the public facilitated the identification of two suspects involved in the fatal shooting: 42-year-old Jhirrell Harris and 37-year-old Stephanie Gayden, both residents of Monroe, Louisiana.

Harris, who was already incarcerated in the Ouachita County Jail in Monroe on an unrelated charge, was served with documents charging him with capital murder, aggravated robbery, and aggravated assault by detectives who traveled to the Louisiana jail this week. While Harris remains in custody in Louisiana, arrangements are being made for his extradition to Collin County.

Gayden, also charged with capital murder, was apprehended and is presently detained in the Collin County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Assistant Chief Darren Stevens of the Frisco Police Department commended the diligent efforts of the detectives in identifying the suspects and effecting their arrest, emphasizing the significant role played by the public in providing critical information that expedited the investigative process.

Stevens expressed gratitude to the public for their assistance, highlighting the vital role of citizen participation in enhancing community safety.

The legal representation status of Harris and Gayden remains unclear. Convictions for capital murder in Texas carry potential penalties of either life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.
