Uvalde remembers victims two years after school massacre

Today marks the solemn anniversary of the tragic massacre at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, which occurred two years ago.

During the horrific incident, two teachers and 19 fourth-grade students lost their lives, making it the deadliest mass shooting in Texas history.

To honor the memory of the victims, families gathered for an emotional vigil in Uvalde on Friday night. The ceremony included the reading of each victim’s name followed by survivors lighting candles in their honor. Musical performances, poetry, and speeches by victims’ families added to the poignant atmosphere.

Brett Cross, father of Uziyah Garcia, urged everyone to cherish their loved ones, emphasizing the importance of expressing love and affection regularly. For Cross, the pain of losing his son remains acute even two years after the tragedy.

In remembrance of the victims, a new school is under construction, located approximately two miles from the site of Robb Elementary. The school is scheduled to open its doors to students in the fall of 2025, serving as a symbol of hope and renewal for the community.

In addition to the vigil, memorial services were held this morning, with church bells tolling solemnly. A former teacher from Robb Elementary, who survived the shooting, stood in Uvalde’s town square for 77 minutes, representing the duration it took for law enforcement to confront the gunman. These acts of remembrance serve to honor the lives lost and offer solace to the community as they continue to heal from the tragedy.
