Some parks at lakes may be closed due to high rainfall

The holiday weekend plans of lake-goers in North Texas might be affected by recent rainfall, as some lakeside parks are experiencing flooding and subsequent closures.

DFW Airport has recorded over 21 inches of rain, causing several North Texas lakes to reach or exceed capacity levels. Consequently, some lakeside parks have been forced to close to the public.

One such park affected by flooding conditions is Tickey Creek Park on Lavon Lake in Collin County. On Friday afternoon, vehicles driving towards the park’s boat ramp found themselves turning around upon encountering the ‘closed’ sign at the entrance.

Local resident Debbi McClellan expressed disappointment, stating her desire to visit the park’s dock.

Lavon Lake, like many others in the region, is currently at 100% capacity, a significant increase from its 84% capacity six months ago, as reported by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Dirgam Vincere, whose uncle helps manage Tickey Creek Park, emphasized the importance of closures for public safety. He noted that many areas are unsafe for swimming or even walking into the water due to the flooding.

Vincere predicts that it could take weeks for the flooding to recede. He also highlighted concerns about erosion affecting areas accessible to the public.

As of Friday, three public parks around Lake Lavon were either partially or fully closed due to flooding conditions: Clear Lake Park (partially), Tickey Creek, and Little Ridge Parks.

With more rain expected in North Texas on Friday and potentially Saturday, visitors are advised to check the conditions of lakes and parks beforehand.
