Suspect arrested after allegedly shooting, killing woman and firing at police in Kingwood, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A suspect is in custody following a Sunday afternoon shooting in Kingwood that resulted in the death of a woman and gunfire directed at responding officers.

Houston police received a report of an assault in progress at 3702 Babbling Creek Drive at 2:35 p.m. Upon arrival, officers were immediately fired upon. Fortunately, no officers were injured, and they did not return fire, according to HPD officials.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly positioned himself outside in an ambush-style attack, shooting at officers as they arrived. The shooting continued for about a minute before the suspect ceased fire and approached the officers with his hands up, at which point he was taken into custody.

Inside the residence, officers discovered a deceased woman with a gunshot wound and found two unharmed children hiding in a closet. The suspect and victims are related, though the exact nature of their relationship is still under investigation. Relatives have taken custody of the children.

Preliminary information indicates that the suspect may have been experiencing a mental crisis, based on his statements to the officers.

The investigation into the incident, including the motive behind the shooting, is ongoing. Police reported finding multiple weapons at the scene, including a pistol and short barrel rifles.

Authorities noted that the Houston Police Department vehicle at the scene was struck approximately seven times. They are also assessing whether any neighboring homes were hit by gunfire.

The case is being treated as a homicide, with the Crime Scene Unit actively processing the scene.
