Harris County Sheriff’s office calls death of 4-month-old girl found in hotel room “suspicious”

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Investigators are examining the “suspicious” death of a 4-month-old infant at a Days Inn in Mission Bend.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that they were called to the hotel on Rancho Mission Drive around 1 p.m. on Sunday after hotel management called 911, reporting that the child was not breathing.

Major Earl Dean from the sheriff’s office stated that investigators are still determining how the hotel management discovered the infant’s death.

The little girl, identified by her family as Brooklyn, did not have a crib and appeared to have been sleeping in a drawer. Brooklyn’s body was found in the hotel room, where she had been staying with her 2-year-old brother and parents.

Dean noted that there was no obvious trauma to Brooklyn’s body. Both the child abuse and homicide units were present at the scene on Sunday. The homicide unit is leading the investigation, and CPS was also present to attend to Brooklyn’s brother.

“[The death is] under suspicious circumstances,” Dean said.

Investigators informed that it could take weeks to determine the cause of death pending the medical examiner’s findings. As of early Sunday evening, no charges had been filed, and it is unlikely charges will be filed for several weeks.

Both the girl’s 20-year-old mother and 39-year-old father were detained for questioning. Additionally, investigators contacted Polk County about taking the father into custody for several active warrants for violent crimes in that area.
