Suspect arrested after allegedly shooting, killing woman and firing at police in Kingwood, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A suspect is in custody following a shooting in Kingwood on Sunday afternoon that resulted in the death of a woman and shots fired at officers.

Houston police responded to a reported assault in progress at 3702 Babbling Creek Drive at 2:35 p.m. Upon arrival, officers were immediately fired upon. Fortunately, no officers were injured, and they did not return fire, according to HPD officials.

Investigations suggest the suspect was lying in wait, intending to ambush the officers when they arrived. The shooting lasted about a minute before the suspect ceased fire and approached the officers with his hands raised, at which point he was taken into custody.

Inside the residence, officers discovered a deceased woman with a gunshot wound and found two unharmed children hiding in a closet. The suspect and the victims are related, although the exact nature of their relationships is still under investigation. The children have been placed in the custody of relatives.

Preliminary information indicates that the suspect may have been experiencing a mental health crisis, based on his statements to officers.

The investigation continues, including determining the motive behind the shooting. Multiple weapons, including a pistol and short-barrel rifles, were found at the scene. The Houston Police Department vehicle on-site was struck approximately seven times, and authorities are checking if any neighboring homes were also hit.

The incident is being treated as a homicide, with the Crime Scene Unit involved in processing the scene.
