Fires destroy historic church and home during North Texas storms

As firefighters work to extinguish the smoldering remains of Royse City First United Methodist Church, neighbors in Royse City come together, embracing one another in a show of support and solidarity.

For congregant Michael Baley, the sight is particularly heart-wrenching. The church holds deep significance in his family’s history, spanning generations. His grandfather once delivered sermons within its walls, and both his parents and grandparents exchanged vows there. Reflecting on his personal connection to the 120-year-old building, Baley recalls the numerous familial milestones that took place within its sacred confines.

Despite the devastation, Baley and his fellow congregants find solace in their faith and mutual support. They draw strength from the belief that, much like Christ’s resurrection, their church will emerge from this trial renewed.

Senior pastor Chris Everson echoes this sentiment, expressing gratitude that no one was present in the building at the time of the fire. Despite the loss of the sanctuary, he reassures the congregation that God’s presence remains unwavering.

Plans for future services remain uncertain, but Everson is determined to hold Sunday worship, albeit in a yet-to-be-determined location.

While lightning is suspected as the cause of the fire, investigations are ongoing, according to the fire chief. Similarly, in the nearby City of Sunnyvale, authorities attribute a residential fire on Tripp Road to adverse weather conditions, possibly resulting from a lightning strike or electrical surge.

Sherin Jose, a resident across the street from the engulfed home, recounts the harrowing experience of witnessing the blaze. Following the storm, her family had sought shelter in the bathroom, only to discover the fire moments later. Quick action and a collective effort, including a swift call to emergency services, helped prevent further damage.

Grateful that the outcome was not more severe, Jose reflects on the shared sense of relief among neighbors and credits the power of prayer for their safety amidst the chaos.
